Why do people want to hurt others?

I stayed up all night crying over something someone close to me has done that could intentionally ruin me financially for a very long time.  I could lose everything, and I did nothing wrong.  It hurts because I really love this person, as a member of my family.  pray for God's protection on this.  Please, Lord, don't let me fall.  I can't take anymore heartbreak or trials at this time...
